  • Very basic Enum & SIP questions

    Hello.
I have done my reading on enum & sip, but I am missing some of the pieces:
    * I want to use sip client software on PCs and mobile devices (open source, not skype or google*, etc).
    * Some software brands also provide sip registration under their brand, but I am leaning towards handling my own sip, as I also manage my own domain names.
    * caveat: I do not understand how SIP works, and some of my statements may be erroneous.

+ What is the correct term for a "sip service" that is able to connect to other sip servers and execute client IP lookup, so as to initiate client session between two or more parties? Are there any "free service providers" for such infrastructure?
+ Is it possible to have a sip address like sip:me@mydomain.com at very low cost? (I'm thinking in terms of "e-mail with your own domain" for this Q)
+ As far as I gather, Enum's real purpose is for VoIP -> trunk (or vice versa). Am I wrong in this observation? What benefits does an Enum account provide for the scenario where domain-name members call each other or 3rd party sip clients using VoIP software installed on devices?

That's all I can think of for now...

    Thanks for your input.

SIP clients typically use TCP or UDP on port numbers 5060 or 5061 to connect to other sip servers.
